I truly cannot find words for how excited I am for this warmer weather (and how over I am with our extended winter). There’s not a whole lot better than summer closet full of warm weather loves and a gorgeous day in Chicago!
That said, if you live anywhere outside of a beautiful southern state (which, I envy you and your summers than begin in March – ha!) you know that a beautiful, warm day is often followed by a chilly one until about…. July? And even then, you never know.
The power of transitional outfits that can go with you from winter to spring to summer is key. So, today I wanted to share with you couple tips I have for bringing closet staples from cold to warmer days.
Layer, layer, layer – textures!
We all know the power of layering – but I’ll tell you what makes the absolute biggest impact on my layered outfits: incorporating textures. For example, with the outfit above, I mix knit, linen, denim, straw, fringe and leather to create some interest in a look that also ties together fabrics typically associate with certain seasons (sweater with winter, linen with summer). The key to mixing lots of layers and textures without looking off is then to stick with neutrals. Which brings me to my next point…
Find your favorite neutral bases and embrace them.
When you have a lot of textures and fabrics being mixed, you want to have one element of your look be a little subdued, and I think color is the perfect way to do this. Then you also have the added benefit of taking your piece with you year-round. I can safely say both my sweater tank and my denim jacket have seen all four seasons over the past year. I love incorporating white and tans into my looks every season.
Add interest with accessories.
If I took off my straw and fringe earrings, I think my outfit would have an entirely different vibe and play much more towards spring style. Add in a fun pop of color and it transitions the whole look! This works with a lot of different accessories, from colorful shoes to floral hangbags that can take a winter look to spring or a spring look to summer.
Learn to love lose and flowy pieces for the odd-weather days.
You know those days where you can’t even tell what the weather is? Or maybe the day starts at 50 degrees and ends at 80? I love throwing on a pair of wide-legged pants or a flowy dress to accommodate the in-between. I love these pants because on a cool day, the additional fabric keeps some body warmth close and on warmer days, it lets your legs have some breathing room!
