The Worst Type of Light for Your Skin
I think back to my middle-school self that lived for a laying out in the sun, baking until I got that perfect shade of tan, and CRINGE. Read just one article about the damaging effects of sun on your skin and you wonder why you ever did that to yourself. Mom and Dad – you were right.
My mindset around tanning has done a complete 180 since truly educating myself on the how cruel our beautiful sun can be to our skin. Let me tell you, I am not one to shy away from the sun, but I now am certainly one to layer on the SPF 50. Let that vitamin D soak in, but keep those harsh rays away from your face.
Along the same lines, I also went under the false assumption that tanning helped with my acne for far too long. As someone who has struggled with acne during my adult years (and hardly during my teenage years? that’s not how it’s supposed to work?), I began to really start researching everything I could about skincare, especially exploring what it is that was irritating my skin so much, and started learning so much about light and its effects on your skin. Spoiler alert: tanning does NOT help.
Tanning simply tints your skin so your acne isn’t as noticeable. However, once your tan fades, your acne scars will be darker and deeper. Tanning is a bandaid. Now let’s chat about the solution…
The Best Type of Light for Your Skin
This leads me to the BEST kind of light for your skin: red and blue UV-free lights. Used together, these two will become your BFFs. Blue light kills 99% of acne-causing bacteria and red light reduces acne inflammation. Packing them together leaves your skin SO much happier than it would be after after too many hours in the sun.
The best part about red and blue lights is that you can now have access to them AT HOME instead of spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars going to the dermatologist for this procedure. Instead, you can spend 50 cents a day – no joke. I am currently loving Neutrogena’s Light Therapy Acne Mask. It works wonders on my skin, is so reasonably priced, and is incredibly easy to use. I have been testing it the past 30 days and my skin is clearer than it has been in such a long time!
Every evening, I throw on my mask, make myself some tea while it’s working away, and sit down to some nightly reading. The mask is so easy to use, makes such a difference, and quite literally only adds one extra minute to your skincare routine. If you don’t believe me, believe the 98% of people who have reduced their acne thanks to this easy little thing’s clinically proven results. If you’ve got just a pimple or two you are trying to clear up, you can try the Light Therapy Acne Spot Treatment instead.
So, skip the harsh tanning and scary chemical treatments and treat your skin to some of the healthy light it is craving! You can grab the same light mask I am loving at Walmart for just $30. Shop away and your skin will thank you!
